CHAIRMAN’S SPEECH – 2016 WPD

NPC Seeks National Population Policy Review
AS Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2015 World Population Day, the National Population Commission (NPC) has called for the review of the National Population Policy in view of the recent changes in the nation’s demographic profile.
The NPC’s Chairman, Eze Duruiheoma, who stated this in Abuja on Thursday July 9, 2015 at a press conference, said the review had become imperative to accommodate current realities.
“The commission has been making efforts to provide a framework for the efforts to provide a framework for effective management of Nigeria’s population through the implementation of the National Population policy,” he stated.
He said the review, being championed by the commission, is targeted at accessing the performance of the programmes outlined in the policy and also to respond to emerging national and international issues in population and development.
The NPC has solicited media support to sensitize stakeholders on the importance of a new population policy that will embody the country’s aspirations and determination to build a united, strong and prosperous nation.
The present National Population Policy on Population and Sustainable Development was adopted in 2004 by the Federal Government and launched by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The review process is being supported by Futures Group in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development.
