is to develop and implement strategies for efficient and effective publicity and mobilization of the people in support of the Commission’s activities.

  • MANDATE OF THE DEPT.

The Department has the mandate to among other things:

  • Develop an information resource centre and authentic source of knowledge on census and population related issues.
  • Install and maintain dynamic information dissemination machinery that can be readily reactivated for publicity purpose at National, State and Local Government levels.\
  • Maintain close and cordial working relationship with media establishments, government, population agencies and international development organisations and
  • Sensitise the public to the development and planning purpose of census, Vital Registration and surveys.

PREAMBLE:

In line with Mr. President’s Transformation Agenda, the National Population Commission has a vision to become a leading population organization in the provision of credible population and demographic data for accelerated national development based on effective population management that leads to global competiveness.

In the light of the above, the Public Affairs Department of the Commission is committed to supporting this vision by highlighting and presenting the Commission in an objective manner, as well as inform, educate and enlighten the public on population and population related issues. The vision is to be a verile centre for advocacy and publicity on population related issues.  The mission is to develop and implement strategies for efficient and effective publicity and mobilization of the people in support of the Commission’s activities.

The Department has the mandate to among other things:

  • Develop an information resource centre and authentic source of knowledge on census and population related issues.
  • Install and maintain dynamic information dissemination machinery that can be readily reactivated for publicity purpose at National, State and Local Government levels.
  • Disseminate information and educate the general public on the functions of the Commission.
  • Produce jingles, TV and Newspaper advertisements, video/films and documentations on census for public enlightenment and education.
  • Maintain close and cordial working relationship with media establishments, government, population agencies and international development organisations and
  • Sensitise the public to the development and planning purpose of census, Vital Registration and surveys.

As a means of aligning with the strategic architecture of the Commission, the department has evolved a comprehensive corporate governance framework that has identified stakeholders and their strategic needs; advocacy thrusts, strategies of the Commission and expected financial contributions.

STRATEGIES

This involves the creation of awareness, generation of active support from the stakeholders and public participation through the following:-

-Establish a mini-studio that can also serve as a media centre.

-Organize advocacy visits to relevant stakeholders

-Engage in media publicity of all activities of the Commission

-Organize press conferences, media relations and workshops

-Produce and air relevant jingles and documentaries

-Develop a library for documentation of materials-CDs, pamphlets, posters, handbills

-Produce and distribute souvenirs as required

-Ensure the presence of Public Affairs officers at the three levels of government

-Organize Trade Fairs, exhibitions, carnivals for publicity of Commissions’ activities

-Acquire relevant equipment and vehicles

-Organize training and study tours for capacity building

-Develop appropriate publicity messages

-Produce and distribute information, education and communication (IEC) materials such as Posters, hand bills, stickers etc.

-Facilitate the full participation of Traditional institutions, the Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Labour Unions, the Media, Faith based organisation, Community based Organisation in social mobilization for the attainment of the goal of the Commission.

-Dialogue with multinational corporations for support and use of corporate social governance for population related issues.
