Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, has one of the largest health workforces in Africa but accounts
for about 10% of the under-five deaths globally. Although under-five mortality declined by 48% between
1990 and 2015, the pace remains significantly slower than needed to achieve the Sustainable Development
Goal (SDG) target of reducing under-five mortality to 25 deaths/1,000 live births by 2030. The 2018 Nigeria
Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) documented an under-five mortality rate of 132 per 1,000 live
births, infant mortality rate of 67 per 1,000 live births and neonatal mortality rate of 39 per 1,000 live births.
